Q. What is the STEM program at Fullerton College?
A. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This field spans a
broad range of majors and careers. The STEM program is comprised of students interested in STEM
fields who enjoy access to special academic enhancements (e.g. supplemental instruction, specialized
advising, field experiences, special events and information opportunities such as scholarships,
internships, undergraduate research, and conferences). The campus goal is to provide services and
support activities necessary for student success and retention.

Q. What is a First Year Experience program?
A. A First Year Experience (FYE) Program is designed to assist students in adjusting to college life and
handling the rigorous academic demands of the classroom. The FYE Program is a new and exciting
initiative, designed to provide dedicated first year students with specific resources, support, and
programming to help facilitate a successful transition and acclimation. It is designed to prepare students
for academic success with structure and a supportive STEM community.

Q. Why should I join the STEM FYE Program? What are the benefits?
A. Even students who excel in high school are sometimes surprised by the rigor of college-level courses.
Unfortunately, many students nationwide who start in a STEM field eventually switch majors after facing
the challenging coursework expected of them. The first-year experience program attempts to alleviate
some of these difficulties. Benefits include:
• A learning community that provides a supportive environment for STEM students to assist one
another in adjusting to the rigorous courses and to college life in general
• Classes that are only open to members of the cohort: MATH 141, CHEM 107, COUN 101 and LIB
100
• Supplemental instruction and study groups to reinforce new concepts and encourage success
• Specialized academic advising and referral to other programs, such as Honors
• Potential to complete required coursework more quickly to facilitate graduation and transfer

Q. What is a Learning Community and why should I become part of one?
A. A Learning Community is a supportive learning environment where students take a combination of
“linked” classes (in this case, focusing on STEM). Students can work closely together, interact with
supportive faculty, and depend on an academic advisor who is knowledgeable in the field of STEM.

Q. Do I have to register for specific courses?
A. Yes. There are cohorted courses that all students in the program will be required to take, such as
Counseling and Library Research. Enrollment in Math, Chemistry, and Engineering is based on
assessment level and major. However, you are also able to enroll in other courses not offered by the
program, space permitting. For example, some FYE students will also be enrolled in the Honors Program
and taking Honors courses in addition to the STEM FYE classes. A counselor will be provided to assist
you with your academic planning.

Q. Is there a theme? Do I have to pursue a particular career?
A. Yes. The STEM First-Year Experience is for students interested in pursuing a STEM academic major
and future career or interested in becoming a math or science teacher.

Q. Are the courses offered by the program different from other courses? How are they different?
A. Yes. These courses will have supplemental instruction and encourage communication among
students and between students and faculty. These benefits may actually make the material easier to
understand and improve chances for success.

Q. Do the courses count for a degree or for transfer?
A. Yes. All of the courses offered count towards an Associate’s Degree and are UC or CSU transferrable.
Most of the courses offered will count for general education or undergraduate major requirements for a
Bachelor’s Degree.

Q. How can I apply to the STEM First-Year Experience?
A. Applicants must:
1. Be eligible to enroll in summer and fall

2. Be an incoming freshman/first year student to Fullerton College, OR a current Fullerton College
student with 12 or fewer completed units.

3. Be an incoming freshman to Fullerton College who has applied for the summer and fall
terms, OR a continuing Fullerton College student with 12 or fewer completed units.

4. Take the Fullerton College Course Placement tests, preferably by June 1 but no later than June
28, unless exempted by AP or college coursework (if you have taken AP courses, you require
advisement by a Fullerton College counselor to determine which assessments are exempted) or
you have been unable to secure an appointment time to take your assessment due to
unavailability of dates. NOTE: Applicants will not be disqualified solely based on assessment
scores, but placing below 100-level may limit eligibility to take offered classes. The application
deadline has been extended due to the high demand for an assessment date.

5. Attach an unofficial copy of your high school and/or college transcript and your Fullerton College
Placement Test results to this application (if available at the time of submission).
Return completed applications by mail or in person to STEM FYE, Office of Special Programs,
Fullerton College, 321 E. Chapman Ave., Fullerton, CA 92821. The office is located in the College
Center, Room 225, telephone 714-992-7067. The early application deadline is June 30. However,
applications will be accepted until the cohort is filled. Please refer to the information at the bottom of
page 4 of the application.

Complete the entire application packet, including the Short Answer Portion and the Privacy Release
and Program Commitment Portion, by the due date. Attach a copy of your unofficial high school or
college transcript and your Fullerton College Placement Test results to the application.

Q. When are applications due for the STEM FYE?
A. The application, including an unofficial transcript and the Fullerton College Placement Test results, are
due by June 30. However, applications will be accepted until the cohort is filled.

Q. What commitments do I have to make to the program if I am accepted?
A. If you are accepted, then there are several requirements you must fulfill to remain in the program:
• Attend the Summer STEM program, August 6-16, Monday-Thursday, 9:00 am–3:00 pm
• Enroll in at least three of the courses offered by the First-Year Experience each semester, unless
granted exemption by the program coordinator and academic counselor due to special
circumstances
• Meet with a college Counselor and faculty mentor at least once a semester
• Participate in at least two Engage in STEM sponsored activities/workshops each semester
through the project Maximizing Student Potential (MSP)
• Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in Fullerton College courses
• Allow Engage in STEM staff to access, share and discuss your academic/professional history and
goals, as well as contact your STEM instructor(s) throughout the semester to verify your progress
and request recommendations on how we may better provide individualized assistance.

Q. How will the applications be evaluated?
A. Applications will be evaluated by faculty/staff using a rubric based on a number of criteria that will
include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Meets all of the eligibility requirements listed in the application packet
• Quality, completeness, and timeliness of the required documents including the short answer
portion, transcripts and assessment test results
• Evaluation of high school and/or college coursework and GPA
• Review of any previous/present involvement in some area of a STEM program, e.g. ROP Project
Lead the Way (pre-engineering) , AP/Honors courses in STEM, community projects, science
fairs, involvement in school STEM clubs

Q. How many students will be accepted?
A. Space is limited in the STEM First Year Experience so that students who are accepted have the
maximum possibility of enrolling in the courses being offered. This is to off-set the college-wide reduction
of courses available to the general population of first year college students. Plus, we want the FYE
experience to be of maximum benefit to the students who are accepted. It is anticipated that
approximately 35-40 students will be accepted. Other qualified students will be placed on a wait list.

Q. How will I know if I am accepted? What is the next step?
A. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status by July 12. You will be contacted using the
preferred communication method indicated on your application. An official acceptance letter with
additional information will also be mailed to you. It is then your responsibility to confirm your participation
in the program by July 16. You will be given instructions regarding the enrollment process, the summer
STEM experience, and a special informational session after you have confirmed your acceptance. Any
student who fails to accept their invitation into STEM FYE before the deadline will be dropped from the
participant list. As previously noted, applications will be accepted until the cohort is filled.

Q. What happens if I’m on the wait list?
A. Students from the wait list will also be invited to participate in the summer STEM experience and
possibly enroll in selected fall courses, space permitting. In the event that a participant drops from the
program or fails to complete the necessary requirements to stay in the program, students on the wait list
will have the opportunity to enroll in additional courses and become a member of the STEM FYE cohort.
